Due north of Dorsoduro, Santa Croce faces the region of Cannaregio on the opposite side of the Grand Canal. Facing onto the Grand Canal is the beautiful baroque palazzo Ca'Pesaro. Built by the Venetian architect Baldassare Longhena in the eighteenth century it contains the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, a collection of mainly Modernist works by artists such as Gustav Klimt, Pierre Bonnard and Henry Matisse. The palazzo also houses the Museo Orientale, which has a collection of exhibits from China and Japan that includes clothing, armour and ceramics.
The church of San Giacomo dell'Orio is one of Venice's oldest churches, dating back to the ninth century. Architecturally it is rather a mixture due to the constant modifications made over time and is a combination of Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance styles. Inside the sacristy, there are some fine examples of work by Paolo Veronese. West of Campo dell'Orio is Venice's narrowest street, Ramo Salizzada Zustro which is just 85 centimetres wide. Along the Grand Canal stands the grand palazzo, Fondaco dei Turchi which was built in the thirteenth century and became warehouse space for Turkish merchants in the seventeenth century, hence its present name. Today it houses the Natural History Museum whose prime focus is on the marine life within the surrounding lagoons.
